In short
Eating in the Jordaan is easier when you distinguish a northern café-and-market morning from a reserved dinner. Noordermarkt and Brouwersgracht suit pie, coffee and Saturday market browsing. Lindengracht and Tweede Tuindwarsstraat add Italian restaurants, while Moeders on Rozengracht offers a Dutch evening meal at the neighbourhood’s southern edge.
- Pie and coffee: Winkel43 on Noordermarkt or Papeneiland at the Brouwersgracht corner.
- Italian meals: Toscanini on Lindengracht or La Perla on Tweede Tuindwarsstraat.
- Dutch dinner: Moeders starts at 17:00; it is not a lunchtime option.
- Market days: Monday and Saturday are different; do not expect the organic market every day.

Apple pie and breakfast around Noordermarkt and Brouwersgracht
Winkel43 is on the Noordermarkt square beside the Noorderkerk. Café ’t Papeneiland is one canal junction away, at Prinsengracht 2 where Brouwersgracht meets Prinsengracht. Choose Winkel43 for café breakfast on the market square or Papeneiland for a pie pause on a Brouwersgracht walk.
Café ’t Papeneiland
Corner café where Prinsengracht meets Brouwersgracht, known for its traditional room and apple pie.
Papeneiland’s apple pie makes a specific sweet café stop at the canal junction. Choose it when you are walking Brouwersgracht or the northern Jordaan. If you need a full lunch or dinner, choose a venue with that food service rather than assuming that every traditional café has a restaurant menu.
Winkel 43
Noordermarkt café known for apple pie, with breakfast, lunch and a terrace beside the western canals.
Winkel43 lists pie at €5.30, with cream at €1 extra, and a breakfast special at €10.50, checked on 26 October 2026. Those are different orders. For a substantial first meal, compare its breakfast or omelette rather than assuming that a pie-and-coffee stop is the same meal.
Noordermarkt food shopping: Saturday is different from Monday
Saturday is the day for the organic farmers’ market on Noordermarkt, with food producers alongside the square’s other stalls. Nearby Lindengracht also has its Saturday market. Monday’s Noordermarkt has a different general-goods and vintage character, with the Westerstraat market nearby.
| Day | What happens here | How to use it for a food plan |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday | Organic farmers’ stalls and general goods on Noordermarkt; market also on Lindengracht. | Browse produce, bread and cheese around the northern Jordaan, then choose a café or restaurant separately. |
| Monday morning | A general-goods/vintage market; Westerstraat adds another market nearby. | Combine the stalls with an actual café breakfast or lunch; do not promise the Saturday food-producer line-up. |
| Other days | The square and cafés remain, without the regular Monday/Saturday market layout. | Choose the café or restaurant for its own opening hours rather than planning a market meal that day. |
The market’s visitor information lists Saturday 09:00–16:00 and Monday 09:00–14:00. Individual stalls are separate traders, and a café opening earlier does not mean the market is already fully trading. On Sunday, a meal in the Jordaan is a café or restaurant plan, not the regular Noordermarkt farmers’ market.
Italian restaurants on Lindengracht and Tweede Tuindwarsstraat
For a main meal, the Jordaan offers more than Dutch café food. Toscanini on Lindengracht is an Italian restaurant with a frequently changing menu; La Perla on Tweede Tuindwarsstraat gives you a pizza counter and a restaurant setting across the street. Choose the format and service you want.
Restaurant Toscanini
Italian restaurant on Lindengracht with a changing menu of antipasti, pasta and seasonal dishes.
La Perla
Wood-fired pizza address on Tweede Tuindwarsstraat, with a counter and a restaurant across the street.
Toscanini opens reservations one month ahead at 09:00. Its regular dinner reservation times are 18:00–21:30 Monday–Saturday, with lunch 12:00–14:00 on Friday and Saturday; Sunday is closed. These are reservation windows, not a promise that you can arrive at any later time and order the complete menu. Groups larger than eight are not accommodated.
The Toscanini Deli at Lindengracht 79 is separate from the restaurant at number 75. A deli purchase and a seated dinner reservation are different arrangements. The restaurant labels the downloadable menu as an example because its dishes change, so the sample should not be treated as a guaranteed list of tonight’s choices.
La Perla’s currently published pizza menu lists a margherita at €17 and carciofo at €19.50, checked on 26 October 2026. The latter includes buffalo mozzarella as well as artichoke, olives and capers: a vegetable topping does not make the pizza vegan. The shared brand’s two street numbers refer to different parts of the service, so confirm where you want to order or sit.
A Dutch dinner at Moeders on Rozengracht
Moeders at Rozengracht 251 is a choice for Dutch home-style cooking on the southern edge of the Jordaan. The room’s photographs of mothers are part of its identity, while the meal itself gives you the reason to book: Dutch dishes in a seated restaurant setting.
Moeders
Dutch home cooking on Rozengracht, with stamppot, slow-cooked beef and a dining room filled with photographs of mothers.
Its service begins at 17:00 daily, with the kitchen listed until 22:00. That is a dinner option after a neighbourhood walk, rather than a place to rely on for a midday market lunch. If Moeders is the meal you want, arrange the rest of the day around that evening service.
The 2026 menu lists stamppot with Louman sausage, a meatball and bacon at €20. The vegetarian version is €21, with grilled vegetables and feta, so it contains dairy. Suddervlees and hachée are €23 each, served with boiled potatoes and red cabbage. Prices checked on 26 October 2026; drinks are separate.
For two or more people, the Hollandse rijsttafel is €24 per person. It combines the restaurant’s Dutch stews and stamppot, with sausage, bacon, potatoes, cabbage and gravy. Here the name describes a Dutch sharing selection; it is a different meal from the Indonesian rijsttafel served by Amsterdam’s Indonesian restaurants.
Lunch near Westerkerk or an afternoon café on Egelantiersgracht
If your day is around Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House area, consider a nearby lunch or café rather than crossing the Jordaan for a second food queue. De Prins serves meals, while ’t Smalle provides a canal café setting with sandwiches and bar snacks.
Café de Prins
Canal-side café near Westerkerk, with daytime meals, dinner and a terrace overlooking Prinsengracht.
Café ’t Smalle
Canal-side café on Egelantiersgracht, with an intimate interior and a terrace by the water.
De Prins lists a daily kitchen from 10:00 to 22:00 and accepts walk-ins as well as reservations. This makes it useful when you need an actual lunch or dinner in the Prinsengracht area, not simply a drink. Its later café closing does not extend the kitchen hours.
At ’t Smalle on Egelantiersgracht 12H, Monday–Thursday opening is 14:00, Friday 13:00 and weekends 12:00. Use it as an afternoon or later-day café choice. Its canal-side terrace is a particular setting; the compact interior is a different way to visit when the weather does not suit the water’s edge.
For a short break before a timed visit, choose the food service that fits the available interval. A seated lunch at De Prins and an afternoon drink at ’t Smalle are different plans. The names of the streets are more useful here than a generic recommendation to find a café somewhere in the centre.
A food walk through the northern Jordaan
This short structure keeps the day around Noordermarkt, Brouwersgracht and the adjoining Jordaan streets. Pick the café and main meal that fit your appetite; it is not necessary to buy something at every venue listed in this guide.
Start near Noorderkerk
Choose breakfast at Winkel43 or pie at Papeneiland; these stops anchor a walk around Noordermarkt and Brouwersgracht.
Walk the canals
Continue from Brouwersgracht along Prinsengracht and the Jordaan streets; on an actual market day, allow time for the stalls.
Choose one main meal
Choose Toscanini on Lindengracht or La Perla on Tweede Tuindwarsstraat; use Rozengracht instead if you have booked Dutch dinner at Moeders.
If you prefer a guided introduction, compare the Jordaan and Dutch-tasting food tours in the separate experience guide. Check the selected route and tasting inclusions when booking. A guided tasting is an alternative to arranging your own food stops, not a table reservation at the restaurants above.
Frequently asked questions about eating in the Jordaan
Is Noordermarkt a food market every day?
No. The regular market days are Monday and Saturday, with a different format on each day. Saturday includes the organic farmers’ market; Monday has general goods and vintage stalls. Cafés and restaurants follow their own schedules.
Can I reserve Winkel43?
No. Winkel43 does not accept reservations. On Monday and Saturday market days, order at the bar; at other times the café uses table service.
Can I eat at Toscanini on Sunday?
The restaurant is closed on Sunday. The deli next door is a different business operation with its own hours; it is not a Sunday dinner service in the restaurant.
Is Moeders suitable for a market-day lunch?
No. Moeders starts its restaurant service at 17:00 daily. Choose a café or lunch venue for midday and keep Moeders as a separate dinner plan.
