Spui and Singel: Indonesian food near the flower market

Sampurna at Singel 498 is beside the Bloemenmarkt area and close to Koningsplein. It serves from 12:00, so it can work for either a lunch in the southern old centre or an Indonesian dinner later.

For lunch, its published menu includes a Piring Biasa at €17 and Piring Rendang at €18.50, checked on 26 October 2026. These single-plate formats differ from ordering a rijsttafel of many dishes. Choose the plate if you want a defined lunch before continuing along Singel or towards the Amstel.

For dinner, Sampurna offers several rijsttafel selections, including the Kuning at €31.50 and Batara at €36.50 per person on its currently published menu. Check which selection the whole table will share and discuss a vegetarian or vegan arrangement with the restaurant. The separate branch on Lijnbaansgracht starts later in the day, so select Singel for this lunch plan.

For a traditional café pause in the same area, Café Hoppe is on Spui 18–20. Its standing room and sitting room provide different ways to stop for a drink or daytime food. That keeps this part of the day around Spui instead of adding a cross-centre journey solely for a café.

Zeedijk and Nieuwmarkt: Cantonese lunch or a later dinner

Nam Kee has two old-centre restaurants within the Chinatown and Nieuwmarkt area. The distinction that helps with a day’s plan is the service: Zeedijk opens at noon, while Geldersekade starts at 16:00 and keeps its kitchen open later.

The restaurant is associated with Cantonese cooking, roast meats and oysters. Its oysters also became part of Amsterdam’s cultural identity through the novel and film De Oesters van Nam Kee. Choose the actual branch menu for the meal; special promotions for the newer Gelderlandplein restaurant in Buitenveldert belong to that other address.

For a walk-in lunch during an old-centre visit, the Zeedijk branch is the relevant choice. For a reserved dinner or a later kitchen near Nieuwmarkt, use Geldersekade 117. Confirm group needs with that branch rather than trying to book the walk-in-only Zeedijk restaurant.

Dutch dinners in historic houses: Spuistraat or Kattengat

If the restaurant is a main part of the evening, choose the length of menu and the part of the centre. D’Vijff Vlieghen is on Spuistraat near Spui; De Silveren Spiegel is farther north at Kattengat, useful if your plans are towards the northern canal belt and Centraal side.

D’Vijff Vlieghen lists four-, five- and six-course menus at €55, €67 and €77, checked on 26 October 2026. Its historic-house setting gives you a restaurant experience with a defined menu length. The regular dinner service is Tuesday–Sunday from 17:30, with Monday closed.

De Silveren Spiegel offers a longer chef-led meal. Its posted autumn 2026 menu lists six courses at €140; Friday and Saturday dinner bookings use six to eight courses. The smaller five-course option shown on the menu therefore should not be used as the expectation for every evening. Lunch is offered on Friday and Saturday, with its own menu and arrival window.

These meals suit an evening when you want to stay at the table. For a shorter pause between sights, the café and counter options below provide different food services in the same central area. The romantic-restaurant guide gives more detail on the historic rooms and longer dinner choices.

Café de Jaren: lunch beside the Amstel

Café de Jaren at Nieuwe Doelenstraat 20 sits between the Muntplein area and the Amstel waterfront. The high-ceilinged café, reading table and water-side terraces make it a useful place for a seated break during a southern old-centre walk.

The current operator information specifies walk-in seating and card-only payment. Treat an outdoor table as a seating preference when you arrive. The café’s inside room also makes the stop useful in weather that does not suit a water-side terrace.

For an evening meal, use the 21:00 kitchen closing. Later snack service has a different menu and a different finish depending on the day. The distinction is useful after a long afternoon around the Amstel: a late café opening is not a full dinner window.

Herring, fries and croquette rolls around Koningsplein

For a short food stop between the canal belt and the southern old centre, choose a specific counter. Frens Haringhandel is at Koningsplein and Vleminckx is on Voetboogstraat. Both fit the area around Singel and Spui without turning a snack into a long restaurant meal.

At Frens, choose a herring portion or a filled roll according to what you want to eat. At Vleminckx, choose the fries size and sauce as separate parts of the order. The shop is a takeaway window rather than a dining room; the price of a named sauce matters when comparing cones.

If your walk continues towards Rembrandtplein, Eetsalon Van Dobben is on Korte Reguliersdwarsstraat 5–9. It is a place for a croquette roll and other eetsalon food. It fits a walk through the Rembrandtplein area when you want a sandwich-style stop before continuing towards the Amstel.

Evening meals around Nieuwmarkt and the Amstel: kitchen times matter

The centre’s restaurants do not share a single late-dinner timetable. Choose the kitchen that fits the part of the evening when you expect to sit down. The following are practical differences between the named places in this guide.

A later dinner near Nieuwmarkt

Nam Kee on Geldersekade lists its kitchen until 23:00. This is the branch to consider for a later meal; Zeedijk’s kitchen closes at 21:00 or 21:30 depending on the day.

A café meal by the Amstel

Café de Jaren’s main kitchen closes at 21:00. Later snacks continue for a shorter period and do not extend the full dinner menu.

A booked historic-house dinner

Choose D’Vijff Vlieghen or De Silveren Spiegel earlier in the evening and allow time for the selected courses. Check the restaurant’s actual booking window and menu length when arranging the meal.

For a day mainly around Nieuwmarkt and Zeedijk, keep lunch or dinner in that cluster. For Spui, Singel and the Amstel, use the southern choices. This makes the meal part of the walk you are already doing, while leaving the longer restaurant menus for an evening you want to spend at the table.

Frequently asked questions about eating in Amsterdam’s old centre

Which Nam Kee branch can I use for lunch?

The Zeedijk restaurant opens at 12:00 daily and is walk-in only. The Geldersekade restaurant opens at 16:00 and accepts reservations.

No. Its current policy is walk-in only. It accepts card payments and the main kitchen closes at 21:00, with snacks available later for a shorter period.

Sampurna on Singel offers single-plate lunch formats as well as rijsttafel choices. It starts at 12:00; choose this branch rather than the later-opening Lijnbaansgracht restaurant.

Nam Kee at Geldersekade 117 lists a kitchen until 23:00. Its Zeedijk branch has an earlier kitchen closing, so use the address as well as the restaurant name when planning.
