In short
The right Amsterdam restaurant depends on the meal, the district and the date. Compare Dutch cooking on the Rozengracht, a greenhouse lunch in Park Frankendael, French-Flemish dining in Oost and a chef menu beside the Rijksmuseum. This is an occasion-led selection, rather than a claim that one table is best for everybody.
- Dutch dinner: Moeders on the Rozengracht is an evening address in the Jordaan.
- Greenhouse meal: De Kas is in Park Frankendael, not the central canal belt.
- Weekday dinner: Rijsel lists Monday-to-Friday service and no vegan menu.
- Museum district: RIJKS restaurant and Rijksmuseum admission require separate arrangements.

Choose a restaurant around the Amsterdam day you have planned
A Jordaan dinner can follow a walk beside Brouwersgracht and Prinsengracht. A lunch at De Kas is a different outing, centred on Park Frankendael in Oost. RIJKS works geographically with Museumplein, but it still needs a separate booking and enough time between the collection visit and the meal.
After the western canals
Keep Moeders or De Belhamel in a Jordaan and canal-belt plan. They offer different cuisines and settings; choose the meal as well as the address.
A destination lunch in Oost
At De Kas, the greenhouse and seasonal menu are the purpose of the trip. Do not add it as a quick sandwich stop between two Museumplein admissions.
A weekday restaurant evening
Rijsel is useful when your dates include Monday to Friday. For a Saturday celebration, start with a restaurant that actually serves that evening.
After the Rijksmuseum
Decide whether you want the RIJKS restaurant meal, an ordinary café stop or a later dinner elsewhere. The museum café, RIJKS and the collection admission are separate choices.
Dutch home cooking and French-Flemish dinner: Moeders or Rijsel
Moeders is the Dutch home-cooking option in this selection. Its service starts at 17:00: put it after a Jordaan walk rather than in a lunchtime itinerary. For stamppot, ask about the complete plate, including sausage, bacon, sauce or any vegetarian alternative. A mashed-potato and vegetable base does not establish the ingredients of the accompaniments.
Rijsel has a different identity, drawing on French cooking and Flanders. The menu changes, so an old photograph of a dish is not a guarantee that it will be offered that evening. The operator publishes a three-course price alongside separate-course starting prices, making it possible to compare a full meal with ordering à la carte. Wines are additional.
Moeders
Dutch home cooking on Rozengracht, with stamppot, slow-cooked beef and a dining room filled with photographs of mothers.
Rijsel
French-Flemish cooking in a former domestic-science school, with an à-la-carte selection and a three-course dinner menu.
For Rijsel, reservations for the following month open on the first day of the current month. Parties larger than six are asked to contact the restaurant. Check the actual booking confirmation for holiday closures and arrival time; an ordinary weekday opening pattern does not override a particular closed date.
De Kas in Park Frankendael: make room for a greenhouse lunch
De Kas is a fixed-menu meal in a greenhouse setting, away from the tight old-centre sightseeing area. The vegetable-led cooking follows the growing season, so a menu description should explain the format rather than promise one permanent signature plate. The standard menu may include fish or meat. Vegetarian and vegan versions must be requested when reserving.
De Kas
Greenhouse restaurant in Park Frankendael, with vegetable-led seasonal menus and ingredients from its gardens and growers.
The restaurant opens reservations three months ahead. Tell it about dietary requirements when booking and ask whether its preparation arrangements meet your needs; an adapted menu is not the same as a guarantee against cross-contact. Families can ask about a children’s menu and space for a buggy rather than assuming an adult tasting-menu format suits every child.
Keep the route centred on Park Frankendael. A walk in the park can accompany lunch, while a second timed appointment at Museumplein introduces a separate journey. If step-free arrival or disabled parking is important, discuss the actual park entrance and access procedure with the restaurant before travelling.
RIJKS restaurant at Museumplein: lunch, tasting menu or à la carte
RIJKS is in the Philips Wing of the Rijksmuseum, but the restaurant is its own booking. Its current menu offers several formats: a three-course lunch, à-la-carte dishes and five-course selections. Choose the format before deciding whether it fits before or after a museum visit. A longer menu deserves its own space in the day rather than a narrow gap before a timed ticket.
RIJKS
Menu-led restaurant in the Rijksmuseum’s Philips Wing, combining produce from the Netherlands with international influences.
The October 2026 menu distinguishes RIJKS TABLE from RIJKS GARDEN. Do not assume that their names alone answer every dietary question: ask which version can accommodate your requirements and whether supplements or pairings are additional. Wine pairings are a separate cost from the food menu.
Canal-side dining at De Belhamel: the room and season matter
At the junction of Brouwersgracht and Herengracht, De Belhamel offers a setting that is quite different from De Kas or RIJKS. Its Art Nouveau restaurant and bar provide an indoor reason to visit; the waterfront terrace adds a seasonal outdoor option. Ask about the actual service and seating for your date instead of choosing solely from a summer photograph.
De Belhamel
Art Nouveau restaurant and bar where Brouwersgracht meets Herengracht, with a seasonal canal-side terrace.
Combine this part of the canal belt with a short walk along Brouwersgracht rather than promising an exact sunset view from every table. Canal orientation, weather and seating position change the experience. If an outside table is essential, obtain the restaurant’s current policy before committing to the rest of the evening.
Restaurant menu prices: compare complete meals, not unlike portions
These official menu examples were checked on 26 October 2026. They show different meal formats, not a city-wide price range. Allow for drinks, supplements and additional courses, and check the current amount before reserving.
| Restaurant and format | Published food price | Budget separately |
|---|---|---|
| Rijsel: three-course menu | €57.50 | Wines; compare with separate courses if ordering less. |
| Rijsel: separate main course | From €31.50 | A starter, dessert and drinks are not included. |
| De Kas: three-course lunch | €55 | Drinks and any additional courses. |
| De Kas: five-course dinner | €86 | Wine or other drinks and optional extras. |
| RIJKS: three-course lunch | €55 | Other menus, additions and drinks. |
| RIJKS TABLE or GARDEN: five courses | €125 | Wine pairing and menu supplements. |
A €55 lunch and a €125 five-course menu answer different needs. At a seasonal restaurant, check the current number of courses as well as the amount: old six-course prices circulating online are not a substitute for the October 2026 RIJKS menu. For De Belhamel and Moeders, use their current menu when you reserve rather than relying on an undated third-party listing.
Booking the right restaurant for dietary needs and the evening ahead
The most useful shortlist is one that fits your party. Rijsel explicitly has no vegan options, while De Kas asks diners to request vegetarian or vegan versions in advance. For Moeders, ask about the specific Dutch dish and accompaniments. Do not generalise one venue’s menu policy to all the restaurants in this guide.
What to know
- For a Saturday dinner, exclude Rijsel’s ordinary Monday-to-Friday service from the initial shortlist.
- For De Kas, allow the journey to Park Frankendael and time for a fixed-menu meal.
- For RIJKS, reserve the restaurant independently from any museum admission.
Keep in mind
- Do not treat a De Belhamel restaurant reservation as proof of a particular outdoor table.
- Do not assume vegetable-led De Kas serves a vegan standard menu.
- Do not compare a Rijsel main-course starting price with a full RIJKS five-course menu.
For a less structured day, Amsterdam also has walk-in cafés, markets and food halls. They are covered in the general dining guide. A guided food walk is another format again: it has a meeting point and tasting itinerary, and does not reserve a table at any restaurant listed here.
Frequently asked questions about booking Amsterdam restaurants
Can I combine RIJKS restaurant with a Rijksmuseum visit?
Yes, if you arrange the meal and museum admission separately and leave enough time between them. Neither reservation includes the other.
Is De Kas a vegan restaurant?
Its cooking is vegetable-led, but its standard menu may include fish or meat. Request a vegetarian or vegan version when booking and discuss your requirements directly.
Can I book Rijsel for Saturday dinner?
Its published ordinary service is Monday to Friday, 18:00–22:00. Choose another restaurant for a normal weekend dinner and check any special-date announcements.
Does De Belhamel always have waterfront seating?
Its terrace is seasonal. Ask about the actual service, weather arrangements and seating policy for your date; the restaurant also has Art Nouveau indoor rooms.
Food walks and museum admission for a different part of your day
A guided tasting walk and Rijksmuseum admission are separate activities. Choose either only if it suits the day; these bookings do not include dinner at the restaurants above.
