Rooftop Bars: Where to Go for the View, Drinks & an Outdoor Table

Compare rooftop and sky bars by setting, terrace access and reservation rules, with practical alternatives when the weather turns.

Choosing a rooftop near Centraal, Oost or Rembrandtpark

For LuminAir, start at Oosterdoksstraat 4 near Centraal; the hotel entrance is different from NEMO’s outdoor staircase. Pair Canvas on Wibautstraat with dinner in Amsterdam East; Café Jakarta belongs to Malabar’s Java Island setting.

Quick advice

A base near Centraal suits LuminAir and the IJ crossings; Oud-West is more convenient for Floor17.

Five rooftop bars and viewpoints with different access

The selection includes cocktail bars, weather-dependent decks and a free daytime roof. Read the access detail before deciding which kind of visit you want.

LuminAir

A sky bar and terrace on the 11th floor near Centraal, with wide city views, signature cocktails and a ceiling inspired by changing clouds. Choose it for a lively drink above Oosterdok, with music programming on selected evenings.

Walk-ins and reservations are accepted. Request outdoor seating explicitly; a table booking does not guarantee a terrace seat. Check the venue calendar for private closures.

Canvas

On Volkshotel’s seventh floor, Canvas combines a restaurant, cocktail bar and views across Amsterdam East. It works for a meal before sunset or a more energetic evening when the music programme is on.

The restaurant takes bookings; the terrace is walk-in only. Check the agenda if you want a quiet meal rather than a dancing night.

Floor17

Above Rembrandtpark, Floor17 brings together a restaurant, cocktail bar and outdoor rooftop, with a broad view across western Amsterdam. Food, a drink and the upper deck are distinct parts of the visit.

The open-air rooftop depends on suitable weather. Confirm whether it is operating and ask about the route between floors if stairs are a concern.

Malabar

Malabar occupies the eighth and ninth floors of Hotel Jakarta. Its indoor sky-bar setting frames the IJ, with cocktails and Asian bites making it a useful choice when an exposed terrace would be less appealing.

The venue operates on a walk-in basis. Use the dedicated bar’s current hours and allow time for the return journey from Java Island.

NEMO Rooftop Square

NEMO’s free outdoor rooftop square is the daytime alternative when the view matters more than cocktails. Terraced seating and the Oosterdok panorama make it a different experience from a hotel bar.

The science museum below requires a separate ticket. Check rooftop hours and the current access route, especially if you need lift access.

Choose a rooftop by the view

Central skyline, eastern neighbourhoods and the IJ call for different routes. The photographs illustrate the rooftop, neighbourhood or city setting; use the venue details below to choose your route.

Amsterdam East

Compare LuminAir, Canvas, Floor17, Malabar and NEMO

Choose between the Centraal-side skyline at LuminAir, Canvas in Amsterdam East, Floor17 above Rembrandtpark, Malabar on Java Island and the free NEMO roof. These places have different access arrangements; a drink booking is not an observation-deck ticket.

Activities to pair with a different view

These are separately ticketed observation-deck, museum and cruise visits. They do not include admission or reserved seating at any of the rooftop bars above; NEMO’s outdoor roof is a separate free-access visit.

Good to know

  • For LuminAir, start at Oosterdoksstraat 4 near Centraal; the hotel entrance is different from NEMO’s outdoor staircase.
  • Pair Canvas on Wibautstraat with dinner in Amsterdam East; Café Jakarta belongs to Malabar’s Java Island setting.
  • For Floor17, plan the journey to Rembrandtpark before choosing a sunset arrival; it is outside the old canal belt.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Do not treat a Canvas restaurant reservation as confirmation of a terrace table.
  • Do not combine the free NEMO roof with museum galleries as though one booking covers both.
  • A rooftop booking is not a ticket to A’DAM LOOKOUT or another observation deck.

An observation deck or a cruise as a separate outing

A’DAM LOOKOUT is a ticketed observation-deck visit; a canal cruise offers views from the water. Neither is a rooftop-bar reservation or a way to bypass a venue’s door policy.

Where to eat around your rooftop plans

Make the meal part of the same outing. Match the restaurant to the rooftop and book dining separately when required; do not assume the last bar entry time is also the last kitchen order.

Five practical tips for LuminAir, Canvas, Floor17, Malabar and NEMO

These five checks distinguish the hotel bars from NEMO’s outdoor roof and keep each outing in the right part of the city.

1

LuminAir: use the Oosterdok hotel entrance

Go to Oosterdoksstraat 4 near Centraal. NEMO’s outdoor roof staircase is a different entrance and a different visit.

2

Canvas: plan dinner on Wibautstraat

Keep the evening in Amsterdam East. Confirm Canvas restaurant dining and terrace seating separately rather than treating one reservation as both.

3

Floor17: leave time for Rembrandtpark

Place the journey to the western side of the city before the intended sunset arrival; a canal-belt dinner adds another transfer.

4

Malabar: pair the sky bar with Café Jakarta

Both belong to Hotel Jakarta on Java Island. Book the meal and the Malabar visit according to their separate arrangements.

5

NEMO: separate the free roof from the museum

The outdoor rooftop visit is different from paid science-gallery admission. Check roof access for the day before combining it with an Oosterdok walk.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit without staying in the hotel?

The selected public bars welcome outside visitors under their own capacity, booking and event rules. That does not include all guest facilities or guarantee a seat.

No. Canvas specifically treats the terrace as walk-in only, while other venues may allocate seating according to weather and availability. Ask about the exact area.

NEMO’s rooftop square is a free daytime public space. The bars are hospitality venues: plan to purchase food or drinks and check any event conditions.

Only if you want both experiences. They are separate bookings, with different hours, access conditions and weather considerations; one is not included in the other.
