Albert Cuyp purchases and contactless GVB journeys
A market purchase in De Pijp, a museum booking and a GVB journey use different payment arrangements. The most consequential transport mistake is switching between a physical card and its phone version.
Albert Cuyp: ask the individual stall
At Albert Cuypmarkt, read the payment notice at the stall before food is prepared. Acceptance can differ between neighbouring traders; the presence of a terminal elsewhere in the market proves nothing about your purchase.
GVB: use one card or device for the journey
For GVB tram, metro and bus travel using OVpay, check in and out with the same physical card, phone or watch. A phone wallet and the plastic card linked to it count as different payment methods.
One OVpay device for the whole GVB journey
A bank card in your wallet and the same card in a phone wallet are two different payment methods for OVpay. On a GVB journey from Centraal to De Pijp, checking in with the phone and checking out with the plastic card does not complete one journey correctly.
- Take the chosen card out of a wallet containing other contactless cards before tapping.
- Check in and out with that same card, phone or watch.
- If the phone also holds your Museumplein admission barcodes, keep enough charge for both transport and entry. A museum booking is not a GVB ticket.
For an incomplete check-in or check-out, use the official OVpay journey-support process. Keep the payment reference available rather than buying another museum ticket to solve a transport charge.
Museum confirmations, café bills and payment backups
Museum bookings: check the seller and confirmation
For Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum, keep the booking confirmation and the actual admission ticket together. The card receipt alone is not the barcode the entrance needs.
Café bills: separate service from a voluntary tip
At a café around De Pijp, the Jordaan or Museumplein, check the itemised bill before adding a tip. Ask staff how a card tip is entered instead of assuming the terminal’s suggested amount is compulsory.
Check the fare with the same device
After a GVB journey, keep track of the card or device used at the reader. Do not switch from your watch to the physical card when checking out.
Keep a fallback away from the day wallet
Before a day crossing Centraal, the canal belt and Museumplein, keep a second usable payment method separate. If your phone handles transport and bookings, carry an accessible copy of the tickets as well.
Good to know
- On GVB, keep the same physical card, phone or watch for check-in and check-out.
- Read the notice at the actual Albert Cuyp stall before food is prepared.
- Keep the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh admission barcode with the confirmation.
Avoid these mistakes
- Do not check in with a phone and out with its linked plastic card.
- Do not infer cash acceptance at one De Pijp stall from another stall’s policy.
- Do not present a bank receipt as a museum admission ticket.
OVpay on a museum day: use the same card or device for every tap
For a tram or metro trip between Centraal, De Pijp and Museumplein, OVpay is a transport check-in system, not an ordinary shop payment. Check out with the same physical card, phone or watch used to check in. A phone wallet and its underlying plastic bank card are different payment identifiers, even when linked to the same account.
A GVB day ticket covers the operator’s services under its conditions; it does not automatically cover an NS train to Schiphol. Keep the transport product separate from museum reservations and restaurant payments. At a market stall, ask the trader which payment methods are accepted before ordering, rather than assuming one Amsterdam-wide cash or card rule.
Tram to Museumplein
Keep the chosen card or device available until you have checked out.
Train to Schiphol
Check NS travel and payment instructions separately from the GVB city ticket.
Albert Cuyp purchase
Confirm payment at the individual stall; a neighbouring vendor can use a different policy.

Frequently asked questions
Is Amsterdam completely cashless?
No. Acceptance differs by business. Check signs or ask rather than assuming all businesses take only cards or all accept cash.
Can I check in with my phone and out with its physical card?
Use the same device or card for both ends of the OVpay journey. The linked account does not make them the same payment medium.
Is tipping compulsory?
There is no universal compulsory tip for every purchase. Check any agreed service or group conditions and decide separately whether to leave a gratuity.
Should we ask to split the bill?
Yes, before ordering if separate payments are important to the group. The business can explain what it can accommodate.
