Early breakfast in Amsterdam: opening time versus kitchen time

An early museum ticket and a leisurely brunch call for different arrangements. If you need to eat before 09:00, the distinction between the café opening and its kitchen opening matters more than a photograph of pancakes. These are published regular hours checked on 26 October 2026; holiday exceptions still apply.

PlaceMorning startWhat that means
Bakers & Roasters, both branches08:30 dailyDaytime breakfast and brunch; De Pijp is walk-in, Kadijksplein also has limited reservations.
Kometen Brood, NDSM08:00 dailyBakery and café on the north bank; include the NDSM ferry approach in the plan.
Kometen Brood Loket, Marineterrein08:30 dailySmaller counter in the eastern waterfront area, on the south bank.
Little Collins, De Pijp09:00 dailyWalk-in brunch; kitchen closes at 15:30.
Dignita HoftuinDoors 09:30; kitchen 10:00An early drink and a cooked breakfast do not have the same starting time.
Winkel43, NoordermarktMon/Sat 07:00; Tue–Fri 08:00; Sun 09:00Check the day: its Sunday start is later than the market-day start.

For a fixed admission time, choose the café near the actual entrance you need, then leave a realistic meal interval. A table in De Pijp does not become a breakfast inside the Museumplein museums. If you only have a short interval before entry, a bakery purchase may fit better than a queue for a cooked plate.

Breakfast in De Pijp: Little Collins and Bakers & Roasters

Bakers & Roasters is on Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat, towards the northern side of De Pijp. Little Collins is on Eerste Sweelinckstraat, between Albert Cuypstraat and Sarphatipark. Pick the address that fits the direction of your morning rather than walking to one and joining a second queue at the other.

At Bakers & Roasters, the posted 2026 menu includes egg dishes, pancakes, granola and a beans-and-tempeh toast option. Its substantial plates make it a breakfast-and-lunch combination if that is what you want. For a smaller order, choose the actual pastry or pancake portion instead of assuming that the largest breakfast plate is the only way to visit.

Little Collins is also walk-in only, with a changing brunch menu. Its 09:00 opening is useful for a later morning, while the kitchen’s 15:30 finish matters if the stop moves to the afternoon. On Sunday, Sarphatipark and the streets of De Pijp remain visitable, but the regular Albert Cuyp market is closed. Brunch is not evidence that the market stalls are trading.

Noordermarkt and the Amstel: café breakfasts in the canal belt

Winkel43 on Noordermarkt is useful for the northern Jordaan. Its menu includes breakfast choices as well as the apple pie for which many people visit. A pie-and-coffee stop and a savoury breakfast are different orders, even when they happen at the same table.

The café’s listed breakfast special is €10.50, an omelette €8 and a croissant €4.50, checked on 26 October 2026. Apple pie is €5.30, with cream listed separately at €1. These examples show why the total depends on what you actually order rather than a general promise of a cheap breakfast.

For the Amstel and southern old centre, Café de Jaren on Nieuwe Doelenstraat opens at 10:00 and works as a later café stop. It is walk-in only and card-only. Choose it when the river-side location suits the day; it is not the option for eating before an early museum entrance.

Hoftuin and Kadijksplein: breakfast east of the old centre

The eastern centre has two distinct settings: Dignita Hoftuin beside the H’ART Museum area and Bakers & Roasters on Kadijksplein nearer the Maritime Museum side. Both are useful alternatives to crossing into De Pijp just for breakfast.

At Hoftuin, allow for the 10:00 kitchen opening. The currently published menu includes Bright Side Eggs on sourdough at €15 and Green and Gold, with poached eggs and potato rösti, at €17. Those are menu examples checked on 26 October 2026.

Kadijksplein is the Bakers & Roasters branch with a limited number of reservations. Do not transfer that policy to the De Pijp branch. If a booked breakfast is important before a museum session, choose the actual location when reserving and keep the meal distinct from any attraction admission.

Bread and coffee at NDSM or the Marineterrein

Kometen Brood gives you two different waterfront bakery stops. NDSM is on the north bank; the Marineterrein counter is east of Centraal on the south bank. The shared brand does not make them interchangeable destinations.

At NDSM, the bakery and café opens at 08:00 daily. This makes sense if the morning is already taking you to the wharf. If your first booking is in the old centre, adding a ferry crossing solely for breakfast creates another journey to fit in before that booking.

The Marineterrein Loket opens at 08:30, with bread, baking and coffee in a smaller counter format. It is a different choice from a full cooked brunch in a restaurant. The weekday closing is 15:00, while weekends extend to 17:00, so the later stop also depends on the day.

Breakfast prices: compare the portion, additions and setting

A croissant, a plate of eggs and a large cooked breakfast are not equivalent price comparisons. Use named menu examples, then add the drink and any extras you want. The following examples come from the operators’ currently published menus, checked on 26 October 2026.

A smaller bakery-style order

Winkel43 lists a croissant at €4.50. That is one item, rather than a pastry-and-coffee bundle or a promise that every Amsterdam bakery charges the same amount.

A cooked egg dish

Bakers & Roasters lists Eggs Florentine at €14.50 and Dignita Hoftuin lists Bright Side Eggs at €15. Their ingredients and portions differ; coffee is a separate order unless the menu says otherwise.

A pancake portion

At Bakers & Roasters, a three-piece blueberry pancake stack is €13.50 and the five-piece version €16. Choose the portion before adding bacon or other extras; it is a different style from a large thin Dutch pancake.

A substantial breakfast plate

Bakers & Roasters lists its Kiwi Brekkie at €25.50 and Vege Brekkie at €20. The vegetarian plate includes eggs and halloumi, so it is not vegan. The menu separately identifies plant-based options such as the beans-and-tempeh toast.

For dietary needs, use the named dish and branch when asking. Bakers & Roasters’ vegetarian eggs and halloumi, Dignita’s egg dishes and Winkel43’s croissant are different ingredient combinations. An ingredient substitution and a suitable preparation process are separate questions; the presence of one plant-based menu item does not describe every pastry on the counter.

Frequently asked questions about breakfast in Amsterdam

Where can I eat before 09:00?

Bakers & Roasters opens both branches at 08:30. Kometen Brood at NDSM opens at 08:00, while its Marineterrein counter opens at 08:30. Winkel43 starts at 07:00 on Monday and Saturday, 08:00 Tuesday–Friday and 09:00 on Sunday.

The De Pijp branch is walk-in only. A limited number of reservations is available at Kadijksplein; most seating still uses walk-ins and the waitlist. Choose the branch when arranging a table.

Its doors open at 09:30, but its published kitchen opening is 10:00. Allow for that difference when planning a cooked meal before a museum booking.

Little Collins and Bakers & Roasters serve breakfast in De Pijp on Sunday. The regular Albert Cuyp market does not trade on Sunday, so plan the café and neighbourhood rather than expecting the usual market stalls.
