Stedelijk Museum: Modern Art, Design & New Ways of Looking

Art and design from the modern era to today, inside two very different buildings on Museumplein

In short

The Stedelijk Museum brings modern and contemporary art together with design. A visit can move from a painting to a designed object, then to an installation that changes how you experience a room. Give yourself permission to be curious: recognising every artist is less useful than looking closely and asking what a work does.

Choose the ticket type carefully. Ordinary museum admission and the Yayoi Kusama exhibition are different bookings during the current retrospective. A standard ticket does not automatically include that exhibition, and eligible card holders may also need a supplement.

What to see in the Stedelijk Museum

The collection is presented through three broad periods: before 1950, 1950–1980 and 1980 to the present. Treat these as a way to compare changing ideas rather than a compulsory route. Design belongs in the conversation alongside visual art, so look for connections between objects made for use and works made to be encountered in a gallery.

1

Collection before 1950 Must see

Look for how modern artists and designers changed ways of representing and making.

2

Collection 1950–1980

Compare experiments in art and design in the decades after the Second World War.

3

Collection 1980–now

Consider how more recent works question established perspectives.

4

Design alongside art

Ask how use, material and production affect your response to an object.

5

The two buildings

Notice the transition between the historic galleries and the contemporary extension.

Quick summary of a Stedelijk visit

Allow around two hours as a personal starting plan, with more time if you want a substantial exhibition visit. Choose a few rooms to explore deeply. The most useful question is often what changed between two works, rather than which one is more famous.

How to visit the Stedelijk Museum

Compare the entry offers below by what they actually include. The ordinary museum offers and the Kusama retrospective offer are not interchangeable. Check the date, exhibition access and any audio-guide inclusions before paying.

The Kusama retrospective runs from 11 September 2026 to 17 January 2027. It explores work across painting, sculpture, installations and other media. If that exhibition is the reason for your trip, choose an offer that explicitly includes it; a lower standard-admission price alone is not the right comparison.

Stedelijk Museum, Museumplein 10, Amsterdam

A historic museum and a bold new extension

The museum’s older building dates from 1895 and was designed by A. W. Weissman. A large white extension by Benthem Crouwel Architects, completed in 2012, added a striking new presence on Museumplein.

The architects retained the older building’s staircase, generous galleries and daylight while adding new space. Much of the extension sits below ground, with its white upper volume raised above a transparent entrance area. The overhang makes a sheltered public space beside the square.

The extension is often nicknamed the Bathtub. Its smooth form contrasts with the historic brick exterior, while the interior connections aim to make old and new work together as one museum. Looking at that transition is a useful part of the visit, rather than merely a way to get between rooms.

Art and design also ask different questions of the visitor. A chair or a graphic design can be considered through use, production and everyday life, while an installation may organise your movement or attention. Moving between these ways of looking is one of the pleasures of a mixed collection.

Art, design and two buildings in dialogue

  • The historic museum and the white extension belong to different building campaigns.

  • The extension was completed in 2012.

  • Its raised white form shelters part of the entrance area.

  • The collection places design in dialogue with visual art.

  • A thematic display can make familiar periods look different.
