Nxt Museum: Immersive Media Art, Light and Sound

New media art in Noord, with a current ADE closure to check before visiting

In short

Visit notice checked 23 October 2026: Nxt’s official website says the museum is closed to visitors this week because of Amsterdam Dance Event. Check the current calendar and a genuinely available exhibition date before travelling or booking. The regular hours below do not override this closure.

Nxt Museum explores the meeting of art, technology and sound in Amsterdam Noord. Large-scale media works can turn a room into part of the artwork, while the programme also looks back at the artists who developed video and electronic art. Give the works time to unfold rather than treating them as a series of quick photo backdrops.

Quick summary of a Nxt visit

Nxt says most visitors spend around 1–1.5 hours in the exhibition. Spend enough time with a moving-image or sound work to notice its changes, and return to a room if the arrangement allows. Dark rooms, flashing light and loud sound make sensory suitability an essential part of planning.

How to visit Nxt Museum after checking the calendar

Check the current closure and an available future date first. The selected offer is for independent exhibition admission, not an ADE event, restaurant purchase or private guided tour. Read the current exhibition title, date and entry instructions before buying.

The related Tickets guide covers other booking channels. Fabrique des Lumières is a separate immersive-art venue at Westergas, with a different programme and address. It is linked as another visual-art experience, not as an included Nxt activity or a substitute ticket.

A new home for media art in a former television studio

Nxt grew from a project founded by Merel van Helsdingen in 2019, later joined by co-founder Natasha Greenhalgh and curator Bogomir Doringer. Its first exhibition opened in 2020 in a former television studio, giving large-scale media art a home in Amsterdam Noord.

The inaugural Shifting Proximities introduced works connecting people, systems and new technology. Later programmes included UFO—Unidentified Fluid Other in 2022, Random International’s Life in a Different Resolution in 2023 and Still Processing in 2025. These are past exhibitions, not a promise that their installations remain on view.

The current MonteVideo collaboration adds historical depth to the idea of new media. Artists were already experimenting with electronic images and portable video equipment in the 1970s. Their work challenged the expectations of an artwork as a single fixed object and helped establish moving images as a medium for galleries.

That history makes the current programme more than a display of recent equipment. Sound, timing, space and the viewer’s position can all be part of a work. The most rewarding approach is to compare how different generations use technology to ask artistic questions, while allowing the individual works to establish their own pace.

Connections between art, technology and the viewer

  • Nxt’s first exhibition opened in 2020.

  • Its Noord home is a former television studio.

  • Pioneers of Media Art is made in collaboration with LI-MA.

  • The current exhibition spans ten spaces.

  • A regular exhibition ticket is distinct from a separately programmed event.
