With Teenagers: Street Art, Science & a Day They Help Choose

Compare creative and hands-on visits with room for food, photos and independent choices, instead of a packed family checklist.

Planning a teenager-friendly day in Noord, Oosterdok or the centre

Group STRAAT with the NDSM area rather than treating it as a short stop beside Museumplein. Let NEMO experiments set the pace of the Oosterdok visit.

Arrival and location

Group STRAAT with the NDSM area rather than treating it as a short stop beside Museumplein.

Neighbourhood plan

Let NEMO experiments set the pace of the Oosterdok visit.

Visit logistics

Choose between WONDR and The Upside Down using the actual room format, not interchangeable photo-room names.

Booking distinction

Do not assume an ArenA visit includes the same pitch or dressing-room access on every date.

Quick advice

Choose the base around the main interest: Museumplein for art, Noord for STRAAT at NDSM, or an east-side route for WONDR.

Street art, science, photo rooms and stadium visits

Use the format of the experience, not the teenager label, to decide what is worth booking.

STRAAT — large-scale art at NDSM

STRAAT gives street art and graffiti a museum setting inside a former warehouse. It can suit visitors who want visual impact and time to look at individual works without a traditional chronological collection.

Combine it with a considered look around NDSM, but distinguish the paid museum from the public wharf. Check the current opening day and any special closure before taking the ferry; the operator currently lists a closure on 27 October 2026.

NEMO — let experiments set the pace

NEMO suits a teenager who still enjoys trying, testing and making rather than only reading labels. Choose it for that interest, not merely because it is labelled family-friendly.

Give the visit enough time and check the activities available on your date. If the group wants different things, agree on a meeting point and the venue’s supervision rules before separating inside.

The Upside Down: choose the photo sets you want

The Upside Down on Europaboulevard is a dedicated photo-set attraction, with a different location and experience from WONDR on Meeuwenlaan. Choose the sets and visit format that interest the group rather than treating the two names as one venue.

Check the selected admission, age guidance and photo arrangements before booking. Allow time for the journey: Europaboulevard is not on the NDSM waterfront route.

A stadium visit — check what access means

A Johan Cruijff ArenA visit can suit a football-focused day, but the selected tour or self-guided experience determines the access. Matches, events and operating arrangements can change what is available.

Read the current inclusions and restrictions, then allow for the journey to the stadium area. It is a main interest-based outing, not a quick add-on to a museum appointment in the centre.

A shopping district — give it a purpose and a limit

Haarlemmerstraat, the Nine Streets or De Pijp can offer a different kind of afternoon. Choose a district based on the shops your teenager actually wants, then agree on time and spending before arriving.

Keep room for a food stop and avoid turning the walk into several hours of adult browsing. Individual opening hours still matter, especially on a Sunday or Monday.

Foodhallen: different counters in one meal stop

Foodhallen in De Hallen lets the group choose different food counters while staying in one complex. Check seating and the way each counter handles orders before splitting up.

FilmHallen is a nearby option for a separately selected film. Agree on a clear meeting point inside De Hallen if teenagers browse or order independently; this works better than leaving the next step undecided.

Let the teenager choose the actual activity, not a photo label

STRAAT at NDSM offers large-scale street art; NEMO at Oosterdok offers hands-on science. WONDR and The Upside Down are separate photo-oriented attractions with different locations and sets. Show the actual format before booking, especially when only one of these fits the day.

  • For a STRAAT day, include the NDSM ferry journey and some time in the surrounding former shipyard area. Do not place it between tightly timed Museumplein appointments.
  • For a NEMO day, give the experiments time instead of treating the building as a photo stop on the way elsewhere.
  • For a stadium visit, read the selected ArenA tour’s route and date restrictions. A photograph of the pitch or dressing room does not establish what is included that day.

Good to know

  • Group STRAAT with the NDSM area rather than treating it as a short stop beside Museumplein.
  • Let NEMO experiments set the pace of the Oosterdok visit.
  • Choose between WONDR and The Upside Down using the actual room format, not interchangeable photo-room names.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Do not assume an ArenA visit includes the same pitch or dressing-room access on every date.
  • Do not add a second Noord ferry outing merely to fill a gap.
  • Do not use an adults-only late bar plan as the evening extension to a family visit.

Build an NDSM afternoon around STRAAT

A STRAAT visit can anchor an afternoon at the former NDSM shipyard. The museum collection and the outdoor district are different parts of the outing: outdoor photographs and a waterfront walk do not require treating every surrounding building as part of the ticket.

Use the NDSM ferry destination stated by the current route information and allow the walk between the landing and the museum. A ferry to another Noord landing is not interchangeable just because it crosses the IJ. Put the return crossing into the plan before promising a later cinema session in Oud-West.

Let a street-art interest determine whether to linger around NDSM; if the main interest is experiments or interactive photo sets, choose NEMO, WONDR or The Upside Down as the day’s main activity instead.

Choose one Noord outing: STRAAT at NDSM or a photo experience elsewhere

STRAAT is at NDSM, so use the ferry destination as part of the plan. EYE and A’DAM are by a different landing at Buiksloterweg; ‘taking the ferry to Noord’ does not put all three at the same doorstep. A visit to STRAAT can continue around the NDSM waterfront without another fixed-time attraction.

WONDR on Meeuwenlaan and The Upside Down on Europaboulevard are separate photo attractions in different parts of Amsterdam. Compare their sets and actual admission conditions, then choose one. If a stadium visit is the main preference, keep the rest of that outing around the ArenA area instead of adding a distant Noord booking.

Street art day

Select the NDSM ferry for STRAAT and leave time for the walk from the landing.

Photo-set day

Choose WONDR or The Upside Down by the experience, not because both are described as interactive.

Football day

Check the Johan Cruijff ArenA visit’s actual access and calendar before fixing the rest of the day.

Interactive visits to compare by interest

Frequently asked questions

Which museum is best for teenagers?

Choose by interest: STRAAT for large-scale street art, NEMO for experiments, or a conventional art collection if that is what they enjoy.

Compare their actual concepts first. One photo-led experience may be enough; they are separate products rather than a combined museum ticket.

Check the venue’s age and supervision rules. Do not infer permission from the ticket age category alone.

The public wharf and a paid museum visit are different. Check admission for STRAAT and any scheduled event separately.
