STRAAT Museum: Street Art on a Warehouse Scale

Large-scale street art, an industrial setting and a ferry journey to NDSM in Amsterdam Noord.

In short

STRAAT Museum brings street art and graffiti into a former shipbuilding warehouse at NDSM in Amsterdam Noord. The scale matters: large canvases and installations sit within an industrial hall, inviting you to move closer for detail and then step back to read the whole image. The ferry journey across the IJ makes this a different outing from the Museumplein museums.

What to see at STRAAT Museum

Look for the different visual languages gathered under the broad idea of street art: lettering, portraiture, abstraction and sculptural work. The museum describes a collection of more than 180 works by more than 170 artists. Displays and projects can change, so approach it as a living programme rather than a checklist of permanently guaranteed works.

Quick summary of a STRAAT visit

Allow around 1–2 hours for an independent museum visit, plus the ferry journey and the walk from the landing. This is a planning allowance. Leave extra time if you want to follow the audio interpretation, explore NDSM outside or pause at the café.

How to visit STRAAT Museum

Compare independent admission with a museum-and-cruise combination. A cruise is a separate activity, with its own boarding location and timing; it is not a direct boat transfer to STRAAT. The entry offers below do not automatically include a live museum guide or workshop.

The museum provides a free Dutch and English audio tour on your own phone. Bring headphones. For wider art plans, the Fabrique des Lumières guide below describes a separate immersive venue at Westergas, not another gallery inside STRAAT.

Good to know

  • The protected industrial building has uneven floors and metal strips.

  • Lifts serve several levels, but the panoramic deck is not wheelchair accessible.

  • Dress for a warehouse environment; indoor temperature is not fully regulated.

  • Check special closures before travelling across the IJ.

Practical tips

  • Step back to read a large work, then move closer for its surface and detail.

  • Bring a charged phone and headphones for the free audio tour.

  • Check the return ferry and leave a buffer before another timed booking.

  • Treat the outdoor NDSM area as a separate walk rather than part of the admission ticket.

How to reach STRAAT Museum at NDSM

Use NDSM-Plein 1, 1033 WC Amsterdam as your destination. From the IJ side of Amsterdam Centraal, take the ferry to NDSM and walk to the museum. Check the current ferry departure and allow time for boarding rather than arriving at the quay at the last minute.

By ferry

Take the free ferry from the IJ side of Amsterdam Centraal to NDSM. Confirm the live route and departures, then allow the short final walk to the entrance.

On foot at NDSM

The museum describes an approximately three-minute walk from the NDSM ferry landing. Use NDSM-Plein 1 and allow for your own walking pace.

By bicycle

Use current cycle directions and a suitable ferry connection. Park without blocking pedestrian routes or the museum entrance.

From industrial hall to street art museum

STRAAT occupies a former shipbuilding warehouse at NDSM. The building is more than a backdrop: its open span and industrial surfaces allow artworks to be encountered at a scale very different from a small domestic gallery.

The NDSM setting links a contemporary art visit with Amsterdam’s working waterfront. Rather than disguising the industrial hall, the museum uses its dimensions to present large works and to make the process of looking a physical activity: moving through the space changes what an image reveals.

Street art has a complicated relationship with the museum. Work associated with public streets, temporary surfaces and changing urban contexts enters an institution where it can be preserved, interpreted and compared. Keep that shift in mind as you read the artists’ messages.

The museum describes artworks made on site and a programme involving both established and emerging artists. An exhibition can therefore introduce new work as well as explain an existing movement. Check current gallery programming if a particular artist or project is central to your visit.

Street art in a shipbuilding warehouse

  • The collection includes more than 180 works by more than 170 artists.

  • Many works were created on site for the museum.

  • The building was used for shipbuilding before its cultural use.

  • The free audio interpretation is available in Dutch and English.

  • A ferry trip to NDSM connects the visit with the wider waterfront.
