Westerpark: Green Walks, Westergas & Industrial Heritage

Waterside greenery and a former gasworks turned cultural district in Amsterdam West

In short

Westerpark brings together green space and an unusually visible industrial past. A relaxed walk can move from trees and waterside lawns to the brick buildings of Westergas, where former gasworks spaces now have cultural uses. Plan time for the landscape even if an indoor show is your main reason to come.

The perfect park-and-culture stop

Allow around 60–90 minutes for a relaxed walk that includes the older park and an exterior look around Westergas. Add separate time for food, a performance or an exhibition. A ticketed activity has its own entrance, time slot and conditions.

Choose your route to suit the weather and energy level. A quiet weekday circuit feels different from a busy event day, when fences, crowds or temporary arrangements may affect parts of the site. Leave flexibility for pauses along the way.

  • Park etiquette

What to see in Westerpark and Westergas

Compare the softer park landscape with the materials and proportions of the former industrial buildings. You do not need an event booking to appreciate the area’s outdoor character. Indoor access depends on the venue and what is happening that day.

Quick summary of a Westerpark visit

This is a flexible outing rather than one fixed attraction. Decide whether you want mainly a green walk, a look at industrial architecture or a park-and-show combination. Keep enough time to cross the grounds without rushing to a timed admission.

Add an optional Fabrique des Lumières experience

Fabrique des Lumières offers immersive art shows inside a former gasworks building at Westergas. The API offers below are optional indoor experiences, separate from the free park. Choose the programme shown on the product page; one admission does not automatically include every show.

Two options focus on different art programmes; the third combines the venue with an Amsterdam canal cruise. Check dates, time slots and both meeting locations for the combination. The cruise takes place separately from your park walk.

  • Keep picnic areas clean and shared paths clear.

  • A wet-weather exhibition plan and an outdoor walk need different timing.

How to reach Westerpark

Westerpark begins near Haarlemmerweg, west of the central city. Westergas extends through the former gasworks site. Use the address of your specific venue for a booking, rather than assuming every building shares one entrance.

By public transport

Check the current GVB route to the entrance or Westergas venue you need. Services and diversions can change.

By bicycle

Westergas encourages arrival by bicycle and provides parking. Allow time to park before entering a booked venue.

On foot

Approach from the Haarlemmerweg side for the eastern park or use the exact address of your Westergas destination. Add walking time inside the grounds.

Westerpark, Amsterdam

From gas production to a cultural landscape

The area’s industrial architecture comes from the former Westergasfabriek, designed by Isaac Gosschalk in a Dutch Neo-Renaissance style for the Imperial Continental Gas Association. Gas production ended in 1967, leaving a polluted site with a difficult future.

Artists and cultural entrepreneurs began using the former factory buildings before the wider transformation was complete. The change required restoration, treatment of contaminated ground and a new landscape that could support recreation as well as cultural activity.

The renewed Westergas site opened in 2003 beside the older Westerpark. This explains the contrast visible on a walk: the green space and the factory buildings have related but different histories. The cultural district is an adaptation of existing structures, not a purpose-built entertainment park.

Later work has addressed the environmental performance of the historic buildings through measures including insulation and more efficient lighting. The site continues to evolve while retaining the scale and identity of its industrial fabric.

Industrial heritage in everyday park life

  • The former gasworks was designed by architect Isaac Gosschalk.

  • Gas production stopped in 1967.

  • The renewed cultural site opened in 2003.

  • Parkland and industrial buildings offer two different readings of the same outing.

  • An art-show booking gives access to its stated programme, rather than all Westergas venues.
