In short
Foam brings photography into the intimate rooms of a historic house on Keizersgracht. Its changing exhibitions connect established artists with new voices, so the programme on your date matters more than a fixed list of famous objects. Take time to look at how a series of images changes the meaning of each individual photograph.

How to visit Foam photography museum
The selected offer is for museum admission to Foam. Check the exhibitions and visit date before booking. A guided tour or workshop is a separate programme; ordinary admission should not be read as a promise of an audio guide, live guide or special event.
The Tickets guide below compares available booking channels. The linked Fabrique des Lumières experience is an entirely different venue at Westergas, useful if you want another visual-art activity on a separate part of your itinerary.

From a canal-house collection to a photography platform
Foam opened in December 2001 with the exhibition dutchdelight, following years of preparation. Photographers Paul Huf and Eva Besnyö were among the figures behind its creation. The new museum gave photography a dedicated Amsterdam platform in a canal-house setting.

The inaugural exhibition considered Dutch light through photographs, making the first programme a statement about the medium rather than a single fixed collection. Its catalogue also became the first issue of Foam Magazine. That relationship between exhibitions and publishing remains an important part of the institution’s identity.
The building has an older cultural story. Collector Carel Joseph Fodor left his collection and house to the city after his death in 1860, on the condition that they remain accessible to the public. Foam explains that the collection later dispersed among other museums, while the Keizersgracht house retained a public cultural role.
Today Foam combines exhibitions, education, publishing and talent development. Established photographers share the institution’s attention with emerging practitioners, and the rooms can hold several exhibitions at once. This makes a visit less about finding one permanent masterpiece and more about encountering different approaches to making, arranging and understanding images.

Foam visiting questions
Which exhibitions are currently showing?
The programme checked 23 October 2026 lists Nadav Kander through 31 January 2027, Hailun Ma and Myriam Boulos through 20 January 2027, and Keerthana Kunnath through 27 November 2026. Check the calendar for later dates.
Is there a permanent display of famous photographs?
Foam’s visitor experience is based on changing exhibitions. Check the actual programme rather than assuming a particular historic image is always on view.
Must I reserve a time slot?
Walk-ins are welcome, but Foam recommends booking online. Choose the correct visit date because exhibition-dependent prices can vary.
Does a standard ticket include a guided tour?
Do not assume so. Tours, workshops and other programmes have their own arrangements. Check the offer and event description.

Access is limited: not every room is reached by the lift. The museum says mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs cannot enter. Contact it before travel to discuss your needs.
Can an accompanying carer enter free?
Foam permits a free companion for visitors unable to navigate the museum independently. Check the arrangements directly before visiting.
Is Foam open in the evening?
Regular Thursday and Friday openings run until 21:00; other days normally close at 18:00.
Is there a café and bookshop?
Yes. Foam lists a café, photography bookshop and Foam Editions gallery. Check any separate opening arrangements.
